We want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible and we have added an  “entertainment”  page to our website, listing all the entertainment that can be brought right to your cottage.   We have ideas for all ages and we would be very pleased to hear of any other ideas for entertainment at the holiday...

July on the Farm

Posted by on Aug 12, 2013 in Catering, Farm, Red Poll | 0 comments

July started with a farm walk for 22 people.    This was followed by a high tea  on the lawn  in front of the Hall.  Everyone enjoyed looking at the sheep and cattle.  A lovely sunny day and a good time was had by all.  More fat lambs were sold.   Barley is starting to turn and the sugar beet is starting to move forwards. The first of the Red Poll heifers went to the new farm at Hill House. Silage making took place a poorer yield than...

BBQs and swimming pools

Posted by on Jul 24, 2013 in Farm, Hellington Hall, Holiday cottages, Livestock | 0 comments

The weather is wonderful.   Let’s all enjoy it (although the farm desperately needs rain.)   We have had many holiday makers making the most of the barbeques and cooling down in the swimming pool or hot tub.   Last week a young boy aged 6 asked his mother if he could live at Hellington Hall Barn for ever and ever.  Unfortunately for him, she had to tell him no. We are taking bookings for 2014 and some key dates are filling up . Please do book to avoid any disappointment. Living with a farmer means always looking ahead by a season and I...

June on the farm

Posted by on Jul 12, 2013 in Farm, Red Poll, Sheep | 0 comments

Cattle are settled at grass although grass growth still appears slow.   15 new Red Poll heifers arrived from Sally and Ed Turner’s, Seahawk herd.   These young heifers will be put to the Red Poll bull next month. Sheep shearing took place at the start of June with the contractors completing in one day.   First of the fat lambs were drawn and marketed to Blakes abbatoir.  Dead weight was 20kg: a very good...

Chilling out in the pool

Posted by on Jun 27, 2013 in Hellington Hall, Holiday cottages | 0 comments

With the summer season in full flow, what a treat to meet Naomi and her husband with their lovely 4 month old twins Scarlett and Reuben, and their three year old daughter. They stayed at the Buttery at Hellington Hall and had a great time chilling out. The twins had their first swim in the pool and loved the experience! We would love to hear from any guests about the fun they’ve had in the pool and how many children have learnt to swim during their week in our holiday cottages. Please email us (with pictures if possible) . We are also...

May on the farm

Posted by on Jun 12, 2013 in Farm, Livestock | 0 comments

The farm is looking as well as could be expected.  Although amazingly it is in need of some rain!   All the cattle are out at grass which is a great relief for myself and them.   On the 23rd May, I headed to Malvern for the National Beef Association’s Beef Expo 2013.  This is an annual event targeted at beef farmers.  A very good day although a rather chilly day for me. Spring barley is looking good but the sugar beet is rather...

April on the farm

Posted by on May 12, 2013 in Farm, Livestock, Sheep | 0 comments

Finally a dry spell! Sugar beet was drilled on the 26th of this month. All the young lambs are growing fast and are eating the spring grass as fast as it comes. Meg the sheep dog has had five puppies! Not all the cattle are out at grass yet so still lots of feeding to do as grass growth is...

April bookings

Posted by on Apr 30, 2013 in Heckingham Hall, Heckingham Manor, Holiday cottages | 0 comments

We have seen extremely high bookings this month. Weekend breaks (Fri to Mon) and midweek (Mon to Fri) are becoming firm favourites. With the cold weather (snow and ice!) in April, the indoor pool was very popular for Hellington Hall and the hot tub was in full use in the snow at Heckingham Manor. The barbeques were taken out of storage and put back in again several times! We decided that we would have some built and every property has a new brick built barbeque ready to use all year...

March on the farm

Posted by on Apr 11, 2013 in Farm, Livestock, Sheep | 0 comments

Lambing started in earnest at the beginning of March and the weather was reasonable. The weather deteriorated rapidly and got increasingly colder and wetter.  However on the whole we have been very lucky and we missed out on the heavy snowfall thankfully.  Calving has progressed well with lots of calves waiting to go out onto some green grass! Spring Crops Barley was drilled on the 26th of March, which was later than usual.    The weather still remains extremely cold and the grass growth is...

February on the Farm

Posted by on Apr 8, 2013 in Blonde d'Aquitaine, Farm, Red Poll, Sheep | 0 comments

As I write,  we have had quite a few dry days!    It really does make a difference.   All the store lambs have finished well on stubble turnips and will be going to Melton Mowbray market on the 5th of March.  The in-lamb ewes are all looking good and about to explode at any time!    The in-calf cows are all looking good with calving imminent. Crops The land is drying nicely,  we hope to spread some FYM (farm yard manure) very soon and start ploughing the sugar beet land.  All the seed has arrived;  lets hope it warms up soon as we are ready...
